How to use the Blackfoot Language resources website

The Blackfoot Language Resources project is based at Iniskim (University of Lethbridge). We offer a collection of user-friendly interactive digital resources for Blackfoot speakers, learners and teachers. The website is always growing and new content is continuously added.

The project is directed by Inge Genee (Piitaakii; University of Lethbridge) and Marie-Odile Junker (Carleton University) and is part of the larger Algonquian Languages and Dictionaries project. You can view the profiles of many of our contributors.

Our resident elder advisor is Ninaisipistoo Francis First Charger, who gave the name Kiistónnoon aiitsí’poyio’pa “We are speaking Blackfoot” to the project.

The work behind this project has been supported by grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC; Insight Grants to Inge Genee and Marie-Odile Junker), the University of Lethbridge CREDO program, the University of Lethbridge’s Chinook and SSHRC Student Summer Research Award programs, and the Province of Alberta’s Summer Temporary Employment Program (STEP).

We have an online dictionary and an oral stories database. You can practice conversational phrases and learn about Blackfoot grammar.

The online dictionary uses the database from Don Frantz and Norma Russel’s Blackfoot Dictionary of Stems, Roots, and Affixes (University of Toronto Press 2017). This database has been digitized and enriched with multimedia, especially audio and pictures.

We also have a page with various kinds of resources about the Blackfoot language, such as linguistic and other publications and links to other websites, apps, and language learning resources. Please let us know if you have something to add!

For more detailed descriptions of our work see Genee and Junker 2018 and Weilandt 2018.
